Enjoy this thrilling mystery from Hannah Duggan, author of Dear Kate. He says he's come looking for her. Her parents suspect him. Her uncle despises him. When Peter Lockton was found dying in the snow, fifteen-year-old Elizabeth Atlee never suspected that this stranger was a former apprentice of the well-known heretic John Wycliffe. Confused by her parents’ secretive glances and frightened by her uncle’s undisguised hatred, Elizabeth is torn when Peter offers to teach her to write. The superstition of her fourteenth century world has crushed every hope of Elizabeth's creative mind. As she struggles to free herself from the guilt of her brother's death she is lead to wonder if the God that Peter serves knows she is innocent. She accepts the lessons only to find out that Peter is being hunted down as a heretic for translating the Scriptures. As his enemies approach Peter escapes to protect Elizabeth, but it's too late. As her home burns to the ground Elizabeth is forced to question everything she knows to be true. In a world of forbidden lies can she discover God's truth?

This was a very interesting fiction based on the historical John Wycliffe and some of his followers, partners and students all involved in the a late English Medieval religious reform movement commonly called the "Lollardy". Their primary goal was to translate the Scriptures from Latin to English so every person could read the Bible for themselves. This created much friction between the local religious leaders and those in the movement. There's mystery and mayhem, inspiration and sacrificial love all wrapped up with a very good ending. The story is very well written and the characters are well developed. Though there were some editing issues that slowed the reading pace in places, it was enjoyable and realistic to the time. I will be reading more from this author.

Love Hannah Duggan books and materials -- they are outstanding.
My daughter really enjoys this book. It's great for teens.
This book hooks you from page one. I wanted to know who the mysterious stranger was. Why was everyone so silent and awkward around him. I anxiously followed Elizabeth, as she discovered the answers to these questions and more. I felt as though I was right there with her on the adventure of a lifetime. I was frightened when she was, worried when she was and I felt her love for her family.
It was very interesting to learn about this time in history as I enjoyed an enchanting story. A page turner!
With Bibles available here in the US in every shape, size, and translation, one forgets the many sacrifices made for this to be possible. This book brings to light those sacrifices.
A very promising writer! Good, clear plotline for most of the story. "I' characters (1st Person POV) are a bit more difficult to get to know and like, but the author did a good job with Elizabeth (I think--it's been a while since I read it...). There a was one part that was a bit unclear to me that included the leather satchel at the end; but if I go back and read it I may be able to make sense of it. Also, a place important to the story was introduced late in the story; if it could have been introduced sooner, at least in Elizabeth's thoughts, it would have given the story stronger continuity. Bravo on her uncle! I believe I felt toward him as the author wished. =) The Christianity in the story could have been brought out more strongly without damaging the story. Doing so would have moved it from the "entertainment" realm to the "entertainment & edification" realm. =)

Writing tip Show, don't tell! One spot stood out to me, but there were others. Ex. "I couldn't think clearly" could have been written in such a way that we could feel her confusion, such as, "I tried to think, but my thoughts were swirling, swirling like the snowflakes, and I couldn't hold a thought without it melting away." That was a bit dramatic, I know. ;)

She had me cheering, which is quite a good thing! I don't recall any parts that were not in good taste. I look forward to reading "Dear Kate" sometime in the future, once I catch up on other book reviews!

Thank you Hannah!

EDITED I forgot to mention the poem! I would pay 99c just for the poem! It's so soothing, and reassuring, and heart-touching! Ah, I cannot say enough about it. I would give a line or two here, but it's best in its entirety. ) I had to ask the author if she wrote it, because it sounds so timeworn and heartfelt and classic!
I had not previously considered what a courageous and dangerous task it was to defy the Church and translate the Scriptures, written in Latin, into English so that the people could understand.
If you know your history, countries had state-churches that required you to only attend that church & to never read the Bible (which was in Latin). Those who tried to have worship at home, read the Bible & try to learn more about God, & those who translated the Latin Bible into English - were jailed and or killed.
This book is a story of a group of people who wanted to know more about God and a group, with Wycliffe,
who were trying to translate the Bible to English - while they were also being sought by the English guards. --- Even though this is fiction, it does show how it could have been & probably was a lot like this. The author just added the young female & who she really was & her story. --- Clean & enjoyable reading.
